I am a painter based in Kendal, Cumbria. My work is primarily focused on capturing the landscapes I experience on an everyday basis through a contemporary lens. Inspired by the works of Breugal, Hockney, Hopper, and Corot, whose work to me always acts as a window to the world in which they lived. Today, some may interpret their work as tinted with nostalgia, but to these artists, their paintings were as contemporary as a mobile phone or road-sign. In my work I always hope to bring a sense of recognition to these scenes. I hope the viewer will identify with the landscape surrounding us, seeing the beauty in the ordinary.
“I made you take time to look at what I saw, and then you took time to really notice…” — Georgia O’Keeffe
I occasionally venture into portraiture, and much of my interest/inspiration follows the same themes as above. Portraits reflect relationships and always subconsciously reflect their time, and hence are always fascinating.
